Day 11: Eureka to The Avenue of the Giants; 50 mi Rest Day

The joke today is 50 mi rest day. Before this trip, Fort and I maxed
out around 60 mi. So a 50 mi "rest day" is humorous.

Fort is a trooper. We just completed back to back centry+ which were
his recovery days from the ghiardia. This is on top of the crash
earlier. Go Fort.

We lost Kevin today as he is on a bus to race at parkfield. The
dynamic was different today; more low key. My mom and sister ran SAG
for us, and Fort can attest that my mom is a pretty good replacement
sparing partner for Scott.

Today was our first real day of sun. It was great to not have to wait
for 2 hours of riding to warm up the knees. Scott was sporting the
lumberjack bibs.

We passed Scotia which I thought was funny and snagged a picture of
Scott. He wasn't impressed.

We passed a bunch of hitch hikers and Scott yelled at one for a high
five durring our pace line. The hiker jumped out of his boots not
knowing what was comming as we barrelled by at 20 mph. So much for
high fives.

The avenue of the Giants is awesome. We are able to ride Hwy 254 the
whole way through. Rushing through the trees is exhillerating. Camping
here there is no light or sound polution other than the sound of the
crickets, frogs, and rambling stream.

Scott pointed out some poison oak while we took photos a few miles
from camp.

My mom boiled finger potatoes from the farmers market this morning.
They were delicious with BBQ sauce for dinner!

Tomorrow is another long day. Maybe 120 miles. Our goal is Fort Brag
and stretch goal is Mendacino. Mendacino puts us in striking range of
Stinson beach which makes HMB a reality. There is a gnarly hill about
45 miles into our ride tomorrow just outside Leggett which could break
us. I hear it might be easier on Hwy 1, and we won't have gear. But
tomorrow will tell.
