Day 12: Unexpected Friends

We left the Avenue of the Trees at 8:30 this morning. Little light
penetrates the thick copse and the morning chill bit through my gloves.

We dropped Fort today. His knees were hurting and his body was tired.
I missed him on the ride, but he was finally able to make good use of
his DSLR from the Saggin Waggen.

Along the road there is a wood carving store and Scott made the joke
we left 'The Gorilla' (Kevin, Size 13 Vibrams) for an Ogre.

We had lunch at Peg House Grill and I had their 'World Famous
Blackberry Sunday'. It was good. We met a bunch of people today which
made us feel not so crazy.

A couple from Norway who was riding from Vancouver to LA. A couple
from Canada who was riding from the Yukon to the southern tip of South
America. And a man named Jim who was riding as far as his bike would
take him. The best was yet to come.

Leggett town proper was clossed so we hit Hwy 1 for the main event!

My mom and sister gave us sag support today which was awesome. Leggett
hill is a monster 7% for 4 miles.

A little ways up Leggett everyone in this unexpected band converged on
one man, Neal Friesen. He is cycling for 'those affected by disasters
in the US and Canada'. You can find more info on his site: www.cyclemds.org
.

Neal is cycling through all of the contiguous US and has covered over
6000 miles with around 3000 left to go. And this man is an animal. He
had fully loaded panniers and kept up with us through leggett and the
rest of the days ride giving us the pleasure of his stories from his
travels. Scott even used him as a draft for Mendecino to win the city
limit sign.
